Taxiway Commercial Traffic Restrictions

We generally discourage the use of the taxiways for commercial traffic.
Taxiways are primarily for the use of aircraft and aircraft related activities. 

The basic parameters are as follows:

  1.  As is already stated in our Bylaws, permission must be obtained from the Airport Manager before trucks will be allowed access to the taxiways. Such activities are to be under the direct supervision of the member. Any damage to the taxiways, grass areas or other airport infrastructure will be the responsibility of the member.
  2. Any vehicle accessing the taxiways must be able to do so without driving on any grass areas. To accomplish this, the truck must be able to complete a turn with a maximum outside radius of 35' and a minimum inside radius of 22.5'. This precludes any possibility of full length tractor trailers from accessing the airport.
  3. Truck weight restrictions are set at 3,000 lbs per wheel with a maximum gross weight of 48,000 lbs. This weight restriction will be further reduced by 20% during thaw and/or wet seasons to 2,500 lbs and 38,400 lbs respectively. Timing for the restrictive "reduced load" periods will generally be during early spring and implemented at the Airport Manager's discretion.

The weight restrictions we have established are based on data provided to us by Morris Engineering and are intended to extend taxiway longevity and minimize damage to our infrastructure. The reduction in weight bearing capabilities during thaw periods or wet seasons, are predicated on established municipal protocol. The reasoning is that asphalt surfaces will "float" and crush when the subsurface is soft or saturated with water.

Thaw season or otherwise, if you have a delivery that needs to be made and the contractors vehicle does not comply with the noted guidelines, they will need to reduce their load and/or vehicle size accordingly or use smaller shuttle vehicles. It is the responsibility of all of us to ensure that contractor and service vehicle operators performing tasks on our behalf are aware of - and adhere to these requirements.

As a reminder, all the grass (and paved areas) at the access points at the end of each of the streets are private property and owned by the individual homeowners to either side of the access ramp. As well, the grass areas adjacent to the east-west and north-south runways are also privately owned by individual homeowners and are not common areas. The same is true for the taxiways....they are all private property with appropriate easements for aircraft access. Aside from the need to protect our airport infrastructure for safety reasons, we all certainly want to avoid expensive repairs that might require a special assessment. In addition, and we are sure you will agree, it is important that we are respectful and considerate of our neighbor's private property.
